Baghpat district, a part of Meerut division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Baghpat town. Natives of the district believe that Pandava brothers for the first time founded the place and named it as Vyagprastha meaning “tiger city” because of the huge number of tigers found at that time. As per mythology, it was one of the five villages asked by the Pandava brothers from Duryodhan in order to avoid the great war, Mahabharat. An interesting mythological story is also associated with the Barnava village near the Binauli in the district is that Mayasura, the demon architect constructed the Lakshagriha (the palace made of lac) in Barnava village in order to kill the Pandavas. Moreover, there are different stories related to the name of the place. The region was also known as Baghpat during the Mughal Era. There is also a place named pakke ghat where Swami Savroopanandji, one of the popular Shankaracharya had got jnana.

Rajendra Singh, a distinguished water conservationist and also popularly known as "waterman of India" was born on 6th August, 1959 at Daula in the district.  In the year 2015 he received the Stockholm Water Prize, an award known as “the Nobel Prize for water”. At present he runs an NGO named 'Tarun Bharat Sangh' (TBS), founded in 1975.

Geographically, the district lies at 28°94'N latitude, 77°22'E longitude and 234 m altitude. In the year 2023, there was a total 1.17% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,321 sq. km. and in terms of geographical area it secures 68th rank in the state and 562nd rank in India. It is bounded by Prabuddh Nagar district on the north, Ghaziabad district on the south, Meerut district on the east and Haryana state on the west. The main river that flows through the district is Hindon River. The climate of the district remains hot and humid in summer and fairly cold in winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 556.1 mm in the year of 2024-25.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Baghpat, Baraut and Khekra. These tehsils are further divided into 6 developmental blocks such as Baghpat, Pilana, Binauli, Chhaprauli, Baraut and Khekra. Moreover, there are 1 Lok Sabha seat i.e. Baghpat and 5 Assembly constituencies in the district. The district comprises 8 towns and 315 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 13,03,048 including 7,00,070 are males and 6,02,978 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 861 females for every 1000 males. Furthermore, the district has projected population of 15,89,054 comprising 8,54,804 males and 7,34,250 females for the year 2026. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), the district has an estimated sex ratio of 938 females and a child sex ratio of 816 females per 1,000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 11.95% out of which 11.11% were males and 12.94% were females. The district has a population density of 986 persons per sq. km.In the year 2023 the number of live births in the district was 35,687 out of which 19,125 were males and 16,562 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 7,978 out of which 5,202 were males and 2,776 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 70.41% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 97.38%.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. Since the district lies on the east bank of the Yamuna River hence it is blessed with some fertile land. Some of its chief agricultural products are sugarcane, wheat, mustard, vegetables, etc. Creating and selling jaggery is also one of the key occupations of the people of Baghpat district. The district has some sugar mills as well. Among all the sugar mills in the district three chief sugar mills are Bagpat Co-operative Sugar Mills Ltd., Ramala Co-operative Sugar Mills Ltd. and SBEC Sugar Mills Ltd. which are located in Bagpat, Ramala and Malakpur respectively. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these agricultural product helps in its economy to a great extent. The Rim and Dhura and several agricultural implements industries of the district are very well known throughout the country. In the year 2023-24 the Gross Domestic Product in the district was Rs. 17,54,557 lakh at current price and Rs. 9,86,981 lakh at constant 2011-2012 prices. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2023-24 was Rs. 15,52,971 lakh at current price and Rs. 8,56,025 lakh at constant 2011-2012 prices. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2023-24 was Rs. 1,07,037 at current price and Rs. 59,001 at constant 2011-2012 prices.

It is a prominent hub of higher education. DIET [District Institute for Education and Training Institute] is set up in the district to improve the level of education and teacher. Among all the colleges of the district, Digambar Jain College started by the Gangaram Kishorilal Jain family, Janta Vedic College started by Mahashaya Chaudhary Umrao Singh, Jag Mohan Institute of Management and Technology opened in 2011, Shri Ram College, Maharaja Agrasen College, Maharaja Agrasen College and Jain Polytechnic are most renowned colleges. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 72.01% including 82.45% are males and 59.95% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 7,97,970 out of which 4,89,858 are males and 3,08,112 are females. In addition, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for the period July 2023-June 2024 estimated literacy rate in the district is 85.53% including 91.06% are males and 80.09% are females (Age 7 Years and Above).

Satyapal Singh, an eminent former Police Commissioner of Mumbai and Member of Parliament (MP) i.e. 16th Lok Sabha was born on 29th November, 1955 at Basauli in the Baghpat district. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party.

During the year 2023, there were 15,55,640 domestic tourists who visited these places of the district. It is a place of religious and historical significance and for this very reason people from different parts of the country comes to this place. Trilok Teerth Dham, a Jain temple at Bada Gaon in the district is built in the shape of Jain Emblem. The height of this temple is 317 feet out of which 100 feet is below the ground and 217 feet above the ground, this thing made the temple unique in itself. A 31 feet tall statue of Rishabhdev on the top of the temple is made up of Ashtadhatu (8 metals) in padmasan posture. Shri Parshwanath Atishaya Kshetra Prachin Digambar Jain Mandir, a Jain temple at Bada Gaon in the district is dedicated to Parshvanatha, the 23rd tirthankar. Moolnayak (main part) of this temple is the idol of Parshvanatha, made up of white marble which was founded from a well inside the temple. It is believe of pilgrims that the idol is miraculous and water of the well have some curative powers. Shivji’s Gufawala Mandir or Kuti Wale Baba, at Sarurpur Kalan village, Pura Mahadev on Hindon River in the district is the place where devotees of Shiva carry Gangajal from Haridwar by walking the entire distance. Natives of the district believe that once the famous sage named Parashuram had founded a Shiva temple in the place called Shivapuri which later became Shivpura and finally Pura. Naag Baba Ka Mandir, located near village Bamnauli allure its visitors especially on the occasion of Naag Panchmi. Kali Singh Baba Mandir, situated near Laliyana village draws pilgrims from far distance place. Valmiki Ashram, situated near the Hindon River is the place according to great epic Ramayana where Luv and Kush, sons of Lord Rama were born and brought up.
