About Sangrur District (Punjab)

Sangrur district is a district of Punjab state with its administrative headquarters located at Sangrur city. The district came into existence in the year 1948. Natives of the district believe that the place was founded by one Sanghu, a Jat, about 400 years back since it named as Sangrur. The present day’s Sangrur district consists of some parts of a few erstwhile distinct administrative units likewise the Philkian States of Jind, Nabha and Patiala, the Mohammadan State of Malerkotla and some parts of the district of Ludhiana. The Archeological Department of Punjab has done many excavations at the various places of Malerkotla Tehsil in the Sangrur district; give enormous evidences of the fact that the district has a glorious history. The name of the place is mentioned in the great epic of Mahabharata for many times. The territory of present day’s Sangrur district including its neighboring areas was a part of the Mauryan empire in 322 B.C. This area enjoyed the blessings of the Gupta administration as well from the beginning of the 4th century to the end of the 6th century. During the starting period of the 7th century, the place was under the rule of Prabhakara Vardhana whose capital was at Thenesar, located near to the today’s Sangrur district. Early in the 8th century, Thanesar ceased to exist and another line of kings i.e. Tomar Rajputs, set up its empire in the South East Punjab. In this way, during different periods of time the place was ruled by different rulers.

Naresh Goyal, an illustrious Indian businessman and founder Chairman of Jet Airways was born on 29th July, 1949 at Sangrur city. He started operating Jet Airways in the year 1993. He was declared as the sixteenth richest person in India by the Forbes magazine. Irshad Kamil, a distinguished Indian Hindi/Urdu poet and lyricist popularly known for writing songs for many super hit Bollywood films like Jab We Met, Chameli, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Aashiqui 2 and Raanjhnaa was born on 5th September, 1971 at Malerkotla in the Sangrur district.

Geographically, the district lies at 30°25' N latitude, 75°84' E longitude and 232 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 0.64% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,625 sq km. and it is bounded by Ludhiana District on the North, Fatehgarh Sahib District on the South, Patiala District on the East and Barnala District on the West. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer and fairly cold during the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 403.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils namely Sangrur, Sunam, Malerkotla, Lehra, Andana and Dhuri. Moreover, it comprises 13 towns and 564 villages. The administrative language in the district is Punjabi.

As per 2011 census the district has a population of 16,55,169 out of which 8,78,029 are males and 7,77,140 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 885 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 12.35% including 11.45% were males and 13.38% are females. The population density in the district is 457 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 20,438 out of which 10,598 were males and 9,840 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 13,332 out of which 7,931 were males and 5,401 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Sikh and Hindu with 65.10% and 23.53% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Punjabi with 94.87%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the farmers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. Every year a huge of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. But the district is scantily industrialised since it has only a few agro based industries. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 34,98,474 lakhs at current price and Rs. 26,48,656 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 31,16,623 lakhs at current price and Rs. 23,48,260 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,70,680 at current price and Rs. 1,28,601 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its most recognised educational institutions are Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhai Gurdas Group of Institutions, La Foundation School, GGS Public School, Akal Degree College, Government Ranbir College, Desh Bhagat Polytechnic College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 67.99% including 73.18% are males and 62.17% are females.

Bhagwant Mann, an eminent Indian comedian and currently serving as the Member of Parliament (May 2014) from the Sangrur constituency of Punjab was born on 17th October, 1973 at Satauj in the Sangrur district. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party in the year 2014.

During the year 2018, there were 90,667 domestic tourists who visited the district. The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Bagrian, a place located at a distance of 18 km. south-east of Malerkotla in the district has a fort which was built by S. Arjan Singh in the beginning of the 20th-century. There is also a gurudwara within the complex of the fort, whose design and size is just similar to that of Golden Temple. Cheema, a place situated 7 km. away in the western part of Sunam in the district has a renowned falls named, Cheema falls. Futhermore, it is the birth place of Sant Baba Attar Singh, equally famous among all sections of people in Cheema. So, Baba Teja Singh, one of his followers built the Janam Asthan Gurudwara in his memory. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Ahmedgarh, Akoi, Badrukhan, Badaur, Bhawanigarh, Tappa, Thikriwala, Suraj Kund, Sita Sar, Mulowal, Moonak and many more.
