History, the Tamenglong district is as old as Manipur. The Rulers of Pakhangba kingdom ruled about 120 years. King Tompok and his successors ruled over the region from 154 A.D. to 654 A.D. After that, the area was controlled by King Kairench. From 1523 to 1027 BC, the Shang dynasty occupied the region. In the mid of 15th century, King Kyamba and later King Kobomba became the ruler. Ningthou Kangba (15th century BC) is famous as the foremost king of Manipur. In 1600 A.D., King Khemba and in 1714, King Garib Niwaj took the throne. From 1753-1758, conflicts emerged in the area. Yuvaraj Bhagya Chandra took over the region in 1760 and expended it up to Myanmar. The district witnessed the attacks by Burmese 1769 AD, in 1773 AD and in 1819 AD. Manipur got freedom from Burma in 1826 by signing the Yandaboo treaty. In the year of 1762, Manipur and East India Company allied first time. The first sub-division office was established in Tamenglong in 1919. The British direct controlled Manipur after the revolt by locals. Manipur became free after the World War II. After 1947, it became the part of the India in 1949.

Armstrong Pame is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer. He built the famous road, known as "Peoples' Road" which connects Manipur to Nagaland and Assam. He was nominated for CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in Public service category in 2012.

Geographically, the district has a total area of 4,391 sq. km. and occupies the rank 3rd in State and 277th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 24°99' N latitude, 93°50' E longitude and 1290 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 86.42% forest area of total geographical area. It is surrounded by the Nagaland state on the North, by Senapati district on the North and East, by Churchandpur district on the South and by Imphal West district and Assam state on the West. The climate of the district remains remains pleasant almost throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 2710.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 sub-districts namely Tamenglong, Tamei, Tousem and Nungba. Moreover, it has 1 town and 175 villages. Meiteilon (Manipuri) is its official language. In the state of Manipur with an allotted district code of 273rd district of Tamenglong came into existence on 15th July, 1983 with its administrative headquarters located at Tamenglong, situated at a distance of 163 kms from the state capital.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 24,477 households with a total population of 1,40,651 comprising 72,371 are males and 68,280 are females which causing it to rank 9th in the state and 606 in India. The density of population of the district is 32 (persons per sq km). The sex ratio is pegged at 943 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 917 (females per 1000 males). The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 26.15% including 24.75% were males and 27.66% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,661 out of which 825 were males and 836 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 2 out of which - were males and 2 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Christian with 95.81% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Kabui and Liangmei with 57.70% and 23.36%.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture primarily. In the year 2006-07 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 29,457 lakhs at current price and Rs. 27,149 lakhs at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 27,114 lakh at current price and Rs. 25,353 lakh at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 21,726 at current price and Rs. 1,248 at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The district is considered as one of the most backward region and is receiving the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). Orange is the main product of the district.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 70.05% out of which 76.09% are males and 63.69% are females. The total literate population of the district is 85,006 including 47,403 are males and 37,603 are females. The total number of illiterates in the district is 55,645 including 24,968 are males and 30,677 are females. Hr. Secondary School, Tamenglong College, Tengkonjang Higher Secondary School, Khangsinlung Higher Secondary School, Langmei High School, Magulong High School, Namtiram High School, Tousem High School, Nungba High School, Haochong High School, Model village girls High School, Thangal High School are some of the main educational institutes of the district.

Gaidinliu was a Naga spiritual and political leader. She was the prime leader of a revolt against British. She became the part of the Heraka religious movement at the age of 13. She was titled as Rani by Jawahar Lal Nehru and called Rani Gaidinliu by locals. After independence, she worked of the welfare of the peoples. She was also awarded with Padam Bhushan.

In the year of 2019-20, there were total 2,926 domestic tourists and 28 foreign tourists who visited the tourist places of the district. The district has a number of famous tourist places to visit. These places are Buning, Barak Waterfall, Kisha Khou, Zeilad Lake, Tharon Cave.
